I love how learning can happen at any time and anywhere - of course this is true for all children (and grown-ups too!) whether they are at school or not, but I guess I've just become more aware of it recently, and I love it when a little mini-lesson will just spontaneously appear. An ear of corn picked up on a country walk was a perfect illustration of this:-
The little kernels of wheat were picked off the stalk,
separating the wheat from the chaff,
and then grinding. We had to make do with the end of a rolling pin (I don't even own a pestle and mortar!) but it did the job pretty well, I think.
We made flour! Rather rustic flour, I'll grant you (cue discussion on the difference between white flour and wholegrain) but flour nonetheless. Brilliant.
