I love it when I see Joe like this - sat up at the table completely absorbed in doing something creative - drawing page after page of little sketches. There's been another "explosion" of this sort of thing recently, we had a phase in year three when he was filling up one notebook after another but last year that all pretty much stopped and he didn't want to put pen to paper at all. But now it is starting again. I started making some little mini books for him and Will to doodle in and they were a huge hit - I bought him a little sketch book and some mini pencils from Smiths and he filled half of it in one day! He writes little captions too and every now and then he will ask me how to spell a word but he often just figures out his own, phonetic way of spelling. The other day I complemented him on how clever this was - I can always work out what he has written - but when I tried to suggest the "correct" way of spelling a word, he just said "I don't care, I like my phonetic spellings!" Well, how do you answer that?! I guess it'll come in time!
We seem to be getting into the swing of things now - mornings are for "learning" stuff but it's all very flexible. We try to cover a little bit of the basics (reading, handwriting practice and some basic maths) and then everything else is a bonus. Lots of science, lots of drawing, lots of reading. All good stuff.
